A Soft Confrontation
Chasing Mirages grew from observing the world around us: people absorbed by screens, chasing love, happiness and meaning through filtered versions of reality, while seemingly losing sight of what is happening right in front of them. The imagery becomes increasingly stark, even apocalyptic at times. But the song never places its writer outside that world. The mirror ultimately turns back on him too. At its heart lies a simple question: what are we all doing?
The song deliberately avoids giving an answer. Its perspective is observational rather than judgemental. Acknowledging these contradictions as part of being human, while still holding up the mirror. What the listener sees in it is ultimately theirs to decide.
That same attitude shaped the music. On first listen, Chasing Mirages could almost be mistaken for a melancholic song about love or longing. Piano, melody and strings create something warm, spacious and at times even beautiful. There is no aggression in the arrangement to tell the listener how to feel about the words.
In that sense, Chasing Mirages is a soft confrontation. It draws the listener in before revealing what lies beneath the surface. Beauty and unease, longing and criticism exist side by side. And even the song itself becomes something of a mirage: what you hear at first isn’t quite what it turns out to be.
Musically, the idea continues in a piano-led arrangement with layered strings, warm, organic production and harmonic turns that move in unexpected but natural directions. The song gradually expands from something intimate into something more cinematic, while remaining rooted in the singer-songwriter tradition: melody, harmony and story come first.
